Getting Your AC Ready For Summer? 4 Sounds You Should Listen For

Now that the weather is finally getting warmer, you'll need to start prepping your air conditioner for summer. One way to make sure it's ready for use is to listen to the sound of things. You might not realize this, but you can tell a lot about your air conditioner from the sounds that it makes. When you start your air conditioner up for the first time this summer, spend some time listening for strange sounds. Depending on the sounds you hear, you may need to contact your HVAC technician before using your air conditioner. Here are four sounds to listen for.

1. There's a Flapping Sound from Outside

If you're hearing a strange flapping noise when your air conditioner is on, you'll want to head outside and check out the area around the condenser coils. That sound could be a sign that you have debris leaning up against your air conditioner. While the situation isn't an emergency, it could turn into one if you don't remove the debris soon enough. You see, if debris blocks the air flow long enough, your air conditioner will overheat and malfunction. If you see debris around your air conditioner, make sure you get the area clean as soon as possible.

2. The Air Conditioner Sounds Like It's Bubbling

While you're outside clearing the debris, take the time to listen for bubbling. If you can hear bubbling coming from your air conditioning unit, you need to have the system inspected by an HVAC technician. Chances are good that the bubbling is coming from a refrigerant leak somewhere in the main unit. Be sure to avoid using your air conditioner until you can get the leak repaired. Leaking refrigerant can be harmful to your health.

3. It Sounds Like Bees

If it sounds like you've got bees in the vents every time you turn your air conditioner you, turn it off and call the HVAC company. That buzzing sound is most likely caused by an electrical problem somewhere in the system. You'll need your HVAC technician to pinpoint the problem and repair it for you as quickly as possible.

4. The Thermostat is Clicking

It's never a good sign when you start hearing a clicking sound coming from your thermostat. The clicking sound may be a sign that your air conditioner is having a hard time cycling on and off. You'll want to have the problem looked at by a trained technician. If you wait too long to address the issue, your air conditioner may break down without further warning.
