AC System Running Poorly? Try Cleaning The Evaporator Coils

If you have recently noticed that your central AC system is running way more than it should and still isn't cooling your house sufficiently, it could be due to dirty evaporator coils. The evaporator coils are a key component of your AC system; however, they can get dirty simply from use. The good news is that you might be able to solve this problem by cleaning the coils yourself. Here are some tips to help you accomplish this.

Locate the evaporator coils

To find the evaporator coils, you should look carefully at the indoor part of your AC system. The coils are typically located near the top of an AC unit, and they are often found behind a door or panel in the system. They are usually copper in color, and they are usually easy to find.

These coils serve an important function, which is to capture heat from your house. The heat is sent outside to the condenser unit, which is there to expel the heat captured in the house. Once you locate the coils, you should make sure you shut the unit off completely before you clean the coils.

Clean the coils

The best way to clean the coils is with a shop vac and a stiff brush. You can begin by vacuuming out the entire area with the shop vac. After you complete this, take the stiff brush and rub it over all the coils. This will loosen and free up any dirt that may be stuck to the coils. When you are finished, vacuum the entire area once again.

In addition, you could also spend a few minutes cleaning the evaporator tray, which is usually located just below the coils. This tray is designed to catch water that forms from condensation. The tray can get dirty over time, and you can usually remove the tray to clean it. If you decide to do this, clean the tray with a bleach solution. This will kill any germs or mold that might be located in the tray.

When you are finished, you can turn the AC system back on and see how it works. If you are still experiencing problems with your central AC system, you may want to call a company that specializes in air conditioner repairs, like HELP Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric. They can help you diagnose and fix any further issues your system may have, and you should notice a big difference with the way your system runs after it is fixed.
